This is a virtual CPD webinar training event led by Kate Bancroft, lecturer in the School of Education at Leeds Beckett University, and Darren Ward, Assistant Headteacher for Behaviour and Reward and Brooklands School in Bedfordshire.

What is the event?

We believe it is important that teachers attend to their own learning, as well as meeting pupils’ need for progress and learning in the classroom. We believe good teachers are always learning! Therefore, we have created this event to provide the opportunity for some CPD that looks beyond much of the skill-based CPD available for PE teachers during the COVID19 lockdown.
It has been named ‘Beyond the Game,’ because the aim is that the morning will examine the following three areas of life in PE teaching that go beyond improving your ability to teach the physical skills and tactics of a particular sport or topic area:

1. Session One: Positive behaviour and relationships

This session will be led by Darren and will centre around positive behaviour and relationships within the classroom and in a practical environment. Darren will give you an incite into the Relationships, Behaviour and Community policy at his school and how changing to a relationships and restorative approach has had a positive impact. He will discuss the vital role PE teachers have within their school community and how you can use this to enhance pupils’ learning.

2. Session Two: Gender attainment gap in PE

This session will be led by Kate and will be focused on why there is a gender attainment gap in PE by the age of seven with regards to attainment, activity levels and attitudes to PE. This session is important for both male and female PE teachers and will give you a range of ‘take-home’ points to improve this in your PE lessons and department.

3. Session Three – Aspiring from PE teacher to Middle/Senior Management

Both Darren and Kate progressed to senior leadership team positions within seven years of qualifying as PE teachers, so session three will go over how this was achieved, and provide ideas and reflections for those PE teachers who want to progress and help a team of teachers grow and evolve and help inspire others in middle or senior management positions.

Why participate?

  1. We want to share our professional experience and help improve children’s lives in your PE lessons.
  2. People who participate will be given a certificate of attendance from Leeds Beckett University for your own CV’s, but we hope this won’t be a motivator to taking part!
  3. We hope this will build a sense of community in PE teachers who want their PE-specific CPD to improve their learning at a deeper level than just PE curriculum/syllabus content.
  4. You will gain a range of take-home ideas from each session which will help you in your own individual career and context.
